This a result of piss poor land management, generally in the form of too many cattle. The tumble of the tumble weed is an excellent dispersal mechanism that allowed them to spew their seed from the mid-west where they first took hold to the real west where they thrive in the spaces provided by the lack of native plant species which where obliterated by hoof and mouth disease.
