Brilliant contemplation of this underappreciated scene.

Marty tells the Dude to slip it under the door, but whether that actually happens on a regular basis is another question. (Note that he has to suggest where to put it, as if perhaps the Dude may not so much be in the habit.)

I kind of hope the Dude doesn’t have to pay much rent. It would really interfere with the bowling, driving around, the occasional acid flashback. And given that Marty has the time to work up dance cycles and the cash to rent dance venues for performances that are very sparsely attended, one imagines that perhaps he’s not esp. hurting for money.

I would assume he gives Marty something, money or otherwise. Marty told him to just “slip it under the door,” as if that was their monthly arrangement.
